It can be about love or the pain of loss. These poems are very old. They began in Arabia during the 7th century.

A ghazal uses short parts called couplets. Each couplet is a pair of lines. These lines are like small, separate stories. They do not need to share one theme. But they do share a feeling or a mood.

The poem must follow strict rules. It must have at least five couplets. Most have between seven and twelve. The first two lines must rhyme. This part is called the matla. All other second lines must use that same rhyme. This rhyme is called the qafiya. They also use a refrain word called the radif. This word repeats at the end of the lines.

Poets often use a pen name. This is called a takhallus. They put it in the last couplet. This part is called the maqta. The ghazal spread to many lands. It is popular in Turkey and South Asia. People even set these poems to music in Malaysia and Singapore.
