A ghazal is a beautiful form of poetry that explores deep feelings. It often focuses on romantic love or the pain of being separated from a beloved.

You might feel the joy of love or the sadness of loss through its words. The name comes from an Arabic word that means to sweet-talk or flirt. This shows how the poem is meant to be a graceful expression of emotion. It is a way for poets to share big ideas about life and spirit. Many people find great meaning in these verses.

Writing a ghazal follows very strict and careful rules. A true ghazal must have at least five couplets, which are pairs of lines. Most poems have between seven and twelve of these couplets.

Each couplet is called a sher or a bayt. Interestingly, each couplet is independent and tells its own complete idea. They do not need to follow one single story like a normal poem. However, they are all linked by a shared mood or a rhythmic pattern. This makes the poem feel like a collection of beautiful, connected thoughts.

There are special names for the different parts of the poem. The very first couplet is called the matla. In the matla, both lines must end with a rhyme and a refrain. The rhyme is called the qafiya, and the repeating word is the radif.

Every other couplet in the poem must then end with that same radif. The last couplet is called the maqta. In the maqta, poets often include their pen name, known as a takhallus. This makes the ending feel very personal to the writer.

The history of the ghazal is very long and travels across many lands. It began in Arabia during the 7th century from older poems called qasidas.

It later moved into Persia and became very popular there. By the 12th and 13th centuries, Persian poets made the rules even more formal. Poets like Saadi Shirazi helped shape the form we know today. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the ghazal reached a "Golden Age" in South Asia. Famous poets like Mirza Ghalib and Mir Taqi Mir wrote wonderful Urdu ghazals.

Today, you can find the ghazal in many different cultures and languages. It is a major part of literature in Turkey and South Asia.

It even spread to Southeast Asia through trade and travel. In Malaysia and Singapore, people often set these poems to music. In those places, musicians might use a violin or an accordion. This shows how an ancient way of writing can live on in new ways. The ghazal continues to connect people through the universal language of feeling.
