Mathnawi

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A mathnawi is a beautiful way to write poems. These poems use rhyming couplets to tell a story. This means two lines rhyme together as a pair.

Then, a new pair of lines starts with a new rhyme. Most mathnawis follow a steady beat. They usually have ten or eleven syllables in each line. There is no limit to how long a poem can be. Some poems are very short, while others are huge. This style of writing helps people share big ideas. It can be used for many different purposes.

Writing a mathnawi follows a very specific way. In Persian mathnawi, poets use a strict meter. This helps the poem sound musical when read aloud. Most of these poems have a clear beginning and middle. They often start with prayers or praise for God. Then, they might include a eulogy for a Prophet. Some poems even describe an object as a special symbol.

In Arabic mathnawi, also called muzdawij, the rhyme is slightly different. These poems often use a pattern of three rhymes. They also use alliteration to make the words sound lovely. This makes the poetry feel very special to hear.

This kind of poetry has a very long history. The first known Persian mathnawi appeared during the Samanid period. This was between the 4th and 10th centuries. Scholars believe this style came from an old Iranian form.

Arabic mathnawi became popular during the Abbasid era. Later, Turkish mathnawi grew between the 8th and 14th centuries. Many Turkish poems were first translations of Persian ones. One of the oldest Turkish poems is called Kutadgu Bilig. It is a didactic poem, which means it teaches lessons. This shows how different cultures shared ideas through art.

Many famous names are tied to these poems. The poet Rumi wrote a very famous Persian mathnawi. His work is called the Masnavi-i Ma'nawi. It is huge, with 25,000 verses across six books.

Many Sufis use his words for prayer. The scholar Abu Hamid al-Ghazali also supported using poetry for worship. In the 21st century, Ahmad Nik Talab is an expert poet. Urdu mathnawi has many stages too. Early Urdu poems began between the 11th and 17th centuries. Later, poets like Allama Dr. Syed Ali Imam Zaidi wrote them. These writers helped keep the tradition alive.

Mathnawi connects many different cultures together. People write them in Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Kurdish, and Urdu. These poems can be about many things. Some are romantic stories about love. Others are heroic tales about brave people. Some are even written just for fun or entertainment.

In modern times, Urdu mathnawi has changed a lot. They are often much shorter now. They focus on everyday subjects and children's poetry. Even though the styles change, the heart of the poem remains. It is a way to turn words into art.
