Thought is the way our minds work to understand the world.

It often happens without us using our eyes, ears, or hands. We call these mental activities cognitive processes. Some people use thought to judge if something is true. Others use it for reasoning to find new answers. You might use problem-solving to get past a hard job. You can also use deliberation to pick the best path. Even memory and imagination are types of thought.

There are many ways that thinking might work. One idea is called inner speech theory. This says thinking is like a silent talk in your head. It is like having a private monologue that you overhear. Some people think we use a special mental language. This is called Mentalese, which is a language of thought. It uses small parts to build many different ideas. Other thinkers compare the mind to a computer. They say thought is like processing and storing information. This helps us move data from one place to another.

Many famous thinkers have shared their own ideas. Long ago, Plato had a theory called Platonism. He believed thinking helps us see perfect, eternal forms. He thought the soul could remember these forms from before birth. Later, Aristotle had a different view called Aristotelianism. He said we learn the essence of things through our senses. For example, we learn "tree-ness" by looking at real trees. There is also a theory called Conceptualism. This idea says we think by calling up mental concepts. These concepts come from our experiences in the world.

Scientists and philosophers use many tools to study the mind. They look at how thought grows from babies to adults. This is a field called developmental psychology. Other experts use neuroscience to see how the brain works. Some people study how we use words in our heads. This is part of the study of linguistics. They also look at how we make choices. This includes things like critical thinking to test our beliefs. They might even use thought experiments to test new theories.

Thinking connects to many things you see every day. You might use reasoning when you solve a puzzle. You use imagination when you dream of new worlds. Sometimes, you might have unconscious thoughts. These are mental activities that happen without you knowing it. You might find a solution to a problem without trying. This is different from thinking that feels calm and rational. Feeling is often about deep emotions. Thought is often about using logic to understand things.
