Revenue service

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Governments need money to work. They use a revenue service to get this money. This group is also called a tax authority. Their main job is to collect taxes. Taxes are payments people and businesses make to the state.

These groups do more than just collect money. They also look for people who do not pay. This is called tax evasion. They may also perform audits. An audit is a careful study of money records.

Sometimes, these groups give money to people. They may pay people who are sick. They also give money to families who need help. This help is called welfare.

Every country has its own group. They have many different names. In the United States, it is the Internal Revenue Service. In Canada, it is the Canada Revenue Agency. In the United Kingdom, it is His Majesty's Revenue and Customs. A leader runs each group. This leader might be called a Commissioner or a Director.
