Agencies can be part of a national government. They can also be part of a state government. Some agencies work on their own. They have their own money and leaders.

In the United States, many agencies have special tasks. Some help with money or rules for business. The Federal Communications Commission is one example. The Federal Reserve Board is another. These groups often work in a board or a council.

Different countries use agencies in different ways. In Sweden, agencies act on their own. Ministers cannot tell them how to do daily work. In France, some agencies are independent. The government cannot tell them what to do.

Agencies have been around for a long time. Long ago, the British Navy Board looked after ships. In the 1930s, the United States made many new agencies. These were called "alphabet agencies." They helped people through new programs. Today, agencies still help many parts of our world.
