Ombudsmen try to find out why mistakes happen. They look for big issues in how services work. This helps stop the same errors from happening again. Some ombudsmen focus only on children. Other ombudsmen work for big companies or schools. They act as a neutral party to help people talk.

This idea is very old. Long ago, leaders in China and Korea had similar roles. In Korea, a secret inspector watched over local officials. In Rome, a leader called a tribune helped common people. The word ombudsman comes from old Nordic languages. It means a representative. Sweden started using the modern version in 1809. By the year 2005, there were 129 ombudsman offices in the world. They help make sure things stay fair for everyone.
