Virology is the study of viruses.

These tiny things can make plants, animals, and humans sick. Scientists study how they work and how they grow.

In 1898, Martinus Beijerinck found a new kind of germ.

He saw it was not a bacteria or a fungus. He called it a virus. Later, Wendell Stanley showed that viruses are made of small parts.

Viruses are very hard to see. They are too small for light microscopes. Scientists use an electron microscope to see them.

This tool uses beams of electrons instead of light. This lets us see their shape. One way to see them is called negative staining. This uses metal salts to show the virus against a dark background.

Viruses must live inside cells to make more of themselves. This is called being an obligate intracellular parasite.

To grow them, scientists use cell cultures. This means growing living cells in a lab. They can also grow viruses in chicken eggs. This helps us make vaccines to keep us safe.
