Trypanosoma cruzi

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Trypanosoma cruzi is a tiny parasite that can cause Chagas disease. This living thing belongs to a group of single-celled creatures called protozoa. These parasites are very good at finding food. They often bore into the tissue of other living things. They mainly feed on blood and sometimes on lymph. This can make many different animals sick. In humans, it causes Chagas disease. In horses, it causes diseases called dourine and surra. Cattle can also get a disease from it that looks like brucellosis.

The parasite needs a host body to live and grow. A special insect helps spread it from one host to another. This insect is a triatomine bug. People often call it an assassin bug, a cone-nose bug, or a kissing bug. These bugs like to live in the nests of animals. They bite animals to suck their blood for food. When an infected bug bites, it also leaves waste on the skin. This waste contains the parasite. If a person or animal scratches the bite, the parasite can enter the body.

Scientists have studied this parasite for a long time. The name "cruzi" honors a Brazilian scientist named Oswaldo Cruz. He was the teacher of Carlos Chagas. Carlos Chagas was the person who discovered the parasite and the disease. The life cycle of the parasite has three main shapes. First, it is an epimastigote that lives and multiplies inside the bug. Next, it becomes a metacyclic trypomastigote. These are the infectious forms found in the bug's waste. They have a flagellum, which is a tiny swimming tail.

Once the parasite enters a host, it changes again. It turns into a round shape called an amastigote. These live inside the host's cells and multiply by dividing in two. Eventually, the host cell breaks open. This releases more trypomastigotes into the bloodstream. These new parasites can then infect more cells or be eaten by another bug. This cycle can be very hard on the body. Over many years, the infection can hurt important organs like the heart or the colon. It can even cause heart failure.

Understanding this parasite helps us stay safe. You can also get sick by eating food that has been contaminated by the bug's waste. It can also spread through blood transfusions or from a mother to a baby. In the United States, these bugs have been found in the Southwest. As the world gets warmer, these bugs might move further north. There are over 130 different species of kissing bugs that can spread the parasite. Knowing how they move and feed helps doctors treat people with medicines like nifurtimox.
