It causes a sickness known as Chagas disease. This germ needs a host to live. A kissing bug helps spread it. This bug is also called a triatomine. The bug bites animals to eat blood. While it eats, it leaves waste on the skin. The germ can then enter the body. This often happens if a person scratches the bite.

People can also get sick from eating contaminated food.

The germ has different shapes during its life. First, it is an epimastigote. This form lives inside the bug and makes more germs. Next, it becomes a trypomastigote. These have a flagellum, which is a tiny swimming tail. They use this tail to swim into host cells. Once inside, they turn into amastigotes. These are round shapes that live inside the cells. They make many more germs by dividing. Eventually, the host cell breaks. The germs are released to find new cells. This cycle can hurt the heart over many years.
