Euglenozoa

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Euglenozoa are a large group of tiny living things. Most are single cells. Some can grow quite long. They move using two tails called flagella. These tails sit in a small pocket.

Some Euglenozoa use a tiny mouth called a cytostome. They use this to eat bacteria. Other kinds make their own food. Many euglenids have chloroplasts. These are tiny parts that use sunlight for power. This way of making food is called photosynthesis.

These tiny cells can also live inside other living things. Some can even infect humans. To make more of themselves, they use cell division. During this, the cell splits into new parts.

Scientists group Euglenozoa into four main groups. These are Kinetoplastea, Diplonemea, Euglenida, and Symbiontida. In the past, people called them plants or animals. They did this based on how they got food. Now, we know they are a special group.
