Alveolate

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Alveolates are a large group of tiny living things called protists. Most of them share one special feature. They have small sacs called alveoli. These sacs sit just under the cell's surface. They act like a layer of support. This helps make the cell's skin flexible. Some types have hard plates in these sacs to act like armor.

These tiny organisms live in many different ways. Some live all by themselves in the water. Others are parasites. Parasites live inside other living things. Some alveolates are hunters. They eat other tiny organisms. Other types use light to make food. These are called photosynthetic organisms.

There are many groups in this family. Ciliates are very common. They have many tiny hairs called cilia. These hairs help them move in rows. Ciliates also have two nuclei. A nucleus is a part of a cell that holds important info. Some alveolates, like dinoflagellates, live in the ocean. Many of them use light to grow.
