Euglenids are tiny living things made of just one cell.

They often live in fresh water. Many euglenids have whip-like tails called flagella. These tails help them move through the water.

Most euglenids have a special skin called a pellicle. This skin is made of protein strips. These strips give the cell its shape. In some kinds, the strips can slide. This lets the cell move in a special way called metaboly.

Euglenids find food in different ways. Some have green parts called chloroplasts. These parts use sunlight to make food. This way of making food is called photosynthesis. Other euglenids eat by taking in small bits. They use a feeding part called a cytostome. Some euglenids do not eat or use light. They soak up food from the water instead.

These tiny cells make more of themselves by splitting. This is called binary fission. First, the tails and feeding parts copy themselves. Then the center of the cell splits. The split moves until two new cells are made. This happens in a long line from top to bottom.
