Kinetoplastid

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Kinetoplastids are a group of tiny living things. They are protists, which are very small organisms. These tiny cells have a special part called a kinetoplast. This is a dense granule that holds a lot of DNA. DNA is the code that tells a cell how to work. This part sits inside a single mitochondrion. The mitochondrion is a part of the cell that helps it work. The kinetoplast is found near the base of the cell's tail. This tail is called a flagellum.

Kinetoplastids use their flagella to move. Some types have one flagellum. Other types have two flagella. These tails help them swim and stick to surfaces. Most kinetoplastids live in soil or water. Some types, like Bodo, eat bacteria. Other types are parasites. A parasite lives inside another animal or person. Some parasites can cause serious sickness. They can cause Chagas disease or sleeping sickness. They can also cause leishmaniasis.

Inside the cell, there are other parts. A network of tiny tubes is called a cytoskeleton. These tubes help the cell keep its shape. These tubes run just under the cell surface. We call this the sub-pellicular array.
