Kinetoplastid

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Kinetoplastids are a special group of tiny living things called protists. They belong to a larger group known as Euglenozoa. You can find these organisms in soil or in water. Some kinetoplastids are free-living and hunt for bacteria to eat. Others are parasites that live inside animals or humans. These parasites can cause serious sicknesses like sleeping sickness. They can also cause Chagas disease or leishmaniasis.

These tiny cells have a very unique way they work. They all have a special part called a kinetoplast. This is a dense granule that holds a large mass of DNA. The kinetoplast sits inside the cell's single mitochondrion. It is located right at the base of a flagellum. A flagellum is a tail that helps the cell move. This tail can be used for swimming or sticking to surfaces.

Scientists have studied these organisms for a long time. A man named Bronislaw M. Honigberg first defined them in 1963. He created the names Kinetoplastida and Kinetoplastea. There is still some debate about which name to use. Some people use Kinetoplastea to name the class. Others use Kinetoplastida to name the order. Lynn Margulis also studied them and changed how they were grouped in 1974.

There are many different groups within this family. Kinetoplastids are split into two subclasses. These are called Metakinetoplastina and Prokinetoplastina. One group is the Bodonidae, which usually has two flagella. Another group is the Trypanosomatidae, which usually has only one flagellum. The genus Bodo is a common type of free-living kinetoplastid. The genus Leishmania is a famous parasitic type.

Inside the cell, a structure called a cytoskeleton helps it stay shaped. This is made of tiny tubes called microtubules. These tubes form a regular pattern under the cell surface. This pattern is called the sub-pellicular array. This structure is like a frame that keeps the cell's body steady. The flagella also attach to the cell using special structures. This helps the kinetoplastid stay organized while it moves through its home.
