The sickness happens in two main stages. The first stage is the hemolymphatic stage. This means the parasites are in the blood and the lymph system. This part can cause fevers, headaches, and itchy skin. It can also make lymph nodes swell up.

The second stage is the neurological stage. This happens when the parasites cross into the brain. This stage changes how the body works. It can cause confusion or trouble moving. It also changes the circadian rhythm. This is the body's internal clock.

Because the clock is broken, people sleep during the day. They stay awake at night.

Doctors use blood tests to find the parasite. They may also check fluid from the spine. It is very important to find the sickness early. Medicine works best before the brain is affected. Without help, the sickness can be fatal.
