He was a doctor and a microbiologist. This means he studied tiny living things. Chagas spent his life looking for ways to help people stay healthy. He was known for being a very hard worker. During his school days, people called him the "two-candle student." This was because he used two candles every night to read. At that time, there was no electricity in Rio de Janeiro. His dedication helped him become a leader in medicine.

Chagas made a massive discovery about a new sickness.

He found a tiny parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi. He named it to honor his friend, Oswaldo Cruz. This parasite causes Chagas disease, also called American trypanosomiasis. He discovered the way it works step by step. First, a bug called a Triatomine bites a person. These bugs are often called kissing bugs. They bite faces at night. The parasite then moves from the bug into the person. Chagas even found that the parasite could live in armadillos.

Chagas worked hard to prove his ideas were right.

In 1907, he went to a small town called Lassance. He stayed there for two years to study an outbreak. He saw that many people were getting sick. He looked inside the kissing bugs and found the parasite. Then, he found the same parasite in a cat. On April 14, 1909, he found it in a two-year-old girl named Berenice. This proved the bug could pass the sickness to humans. He also found it could cause serious heart disease.

Chagas was also the first to find a tiny fungus.
