He was a leader in studying how the body stays healthy. This field is called immunology. He also studied blood cells and how to fight germs. Many people call him the "father of immunology" because of his work. His ideas helped doctors treat many different diseases.

Ehrlich used colorful dyes to see tiny things under a microscope.

He used these dyes to stain blood and tissue. This process let him see the different parts of a cell. For example, he found small grains inside some cells. He named these "mast cells" after a type of animal feed. He also found new ways to tell white blood cells apart.

He called this idea a "magic bullet." He meant a medicine that hits only the bad germ. In 1909, his lab found a drug called Salvarsan. This was the first effective treatment for syphilis. This discovery helped start a field called chemotherapy.

The way we use drugs to fight germs started with his ideas. Even the way we study blood comes from his staining methods. A group of bacteria is even named "Ehrlichia" after him. In 1947, a German research center was named the Paul Ehrlich Institute. This center still works on vaccines and medicines today. His life's work continues to help people stay well.
