Metchnikoff is best known for his work in immunology. This is the study of how the body fights germs. In 1882, he discovered a process called phagocytosis. This is a way the body protects itself from harm. He found that special cells surround and eat tiny, harmful things. He called these cells phagocytes. He specifically identified a type called a macrophage.

This discovery helped us understand innate immunity, which is the body's first line of defense.

His journey into science began with many different studies. He studied biology at the University of Würzburg and Kharkov Imperial University. He also traveled to Germany to study life in the sea. In 1865, he discovered how flatworms digest food inside their cells. He later moved to Naples to study how small sea creatures grow. In 1867, he received his doctorate in Saint Petersburg.

They were honored for their important work on immunity. He also won the Copley Medal in 1906. In 1903, he created the term gerontology. This is the scientific study of aging and how long life lasts.

His ideas connect to many things we use today. He believed that healthy bacteria in the gut could help people live longer. He thought that eating lactic acid bacteria was very important. This idea led to the modern use of probiotics. Probiotics are helpful living things found in food. He even drank sour milk every single day to test his own theory.
