He spent his life studying how living things work. He was very curious about the world around him. This curiosity led him to study how bodies digest food. His work helped people understand many parts of biology. He is also well known for his work on how animals learn. This is called classical conditioning.

Pavlov studied how the body breaks down food. He used many different methods to do this. He often worked with dogs in his laboratory.

He wanted to see how their bodies worked over a long time. He called these chronic experiments. This was different from older studies that were very short. He used tools to look at digestive glands. He even created a special pouch to study how organs worked. This helped him see how the body reacts to things.

Pavlov grew up in a place called Ryazan.

He was the first of ten children in his family. His father was a priest. As a boy, Pavlov loved to garden and swim. He was very smart and could read by age seven. He did not start formal school until he was 11. This was because he had a bad fall from a wall. He later studied at the University of Saint Petersburg. He also studied at the Medical Military Academy.

Many important things happened during his career. In 1904, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

This was for his work on digestion. He was the first person from Russia to win this prize. He spent 45 years directing a famous research institute. He also wrote a big book in 1897. It was called The Work of the Digestive Glands. He lived to be 86 years old. He died in February of 1936.

We can see Pavlov's work in how we understand behavior. He studied how the nervous system sends signals. He looked at how different personalities react to stress. He found that bodies have a way of shutting down during pain. This is called transmarginal inhibition. It is a natural response to overwhelming stress. Pavlov's ideas help us understand how all living things react to the world. His research changed how we look at the mind and the body.
