To do this, he often surgically created a fistula in a dog's throat. A fistula is a passage that connects an internal organ to the outside. He used these to observe how digestive glands functioned in real time. One specific technique involved creating an exteriorized section of the stomach. This became known as the Heidenhain or Pavlov pouch. This allowed him to study the organ's contents and nerve supply directly.

His research covered several distinct areas of the nervous system. First, he studied the regulation of reflexes in circulatory organs. He investigated how nerves control the heart and blood vessels. Second, he explored the concept of temperament. Pavlov identified three main properties of the nervous system: strength, mobility, and the balance between excitation and inhibition. Based on these, he categorized four temperament types. He updated the traditional names to more descriptive terms. These included the strong and impetuous type, the strong equilibrated and quiet type, the strong equilibrated and lively type, and the weak type.

Pavlov also discovered a specific neurological response called transmarginal inhibition, or TMI. This is the body's natural mechanism for shutting down during overwhelming stress or pain. He observed this by exposing subjects to electric shocks. His research showed that while all temperaments respond to stress, they do so at different speeds. The "quick-to-shut-down" individuals possessed a fundamentally different type of nervous system. This work provided deep insight into how biological systems protect themselves from extreme stimuli.

He was the eldest of ten children born to a priest and a homemaker. Although he could read at age seven, a serious fall from a wall delayed his schooling. He eventually studied at the University of Saint Petersburg. He later attended the Imperial Academy of Medical Surgery and the Medical Military Academy. His academic career was marked by high honors, including a gold medal for his research. By 1891, he was directing the Department of Physiology at the Institute of Experimental Medicine. He led this institute for 45 years, turning it into a global research center.

His scientific achievements were recognized on the world stage. In 1904, he became the first Russian to win a Nobel Prize. The Nobel Committee recognized his work for transforming our knowledge of digestion. He also published a massive, detailed study in 1897 titled The Work of the Digestive Glands. This book was the result of 12 years of intense laboratory investigation. Even in his later years, Pavlov remained a dedicated scientist. He even grew potatoes and carrots in his laboratory as a pastime.

Throughout his life, Pavlov maintained complex relationships with the Soviet government. While the government provided significant funding and praise, Pavlov was often critical of Communist policies. He expressed deep disapproval of social experiments conducted by the regime. He even wrote to Joseph Stalin to protest the treatment of Russian intellectuals. Despite these tensions, he remained a respected figure in the scientific community. He lived to the age of 86, dying of double pneumonia in 1936. He requested that a student record his final moments to provide evidence of his subjective experience. Today, his legacy lives on through his foundational work in both physiology and psychology.
