Louis Pasteur was a famous French scientist who changed how we see the world.

He worked as a chemist, a pharmacist, and a microbiologist. A microbiologist is someone who studies tiny living things called microbes. Because of his great work, people call him the "father of microbiology."

He also helped start the field of bacteriology, which is the study of bacteria. His discoveries helped people understand how to prevent many different diseases. These ideas helped create the rules for hygiene and modern medicine we use today.

Pasteur used many experiments to show how microbes work.

He wanted to know why some liquids, like wine, would turn sour. He discovered that yeast is a living thing that turns sugar into alcohol. This process is called fermentation.

He also found that other tiny microbes could get into the wine and spoil it. To fix this, he invented a way to heat liquids like milk and wine. He heated them between 60 and 100 degrees Celsius. This killed the bad microbes without ruining the drink. This method is called pasteurization, and it is named after him.

Before Pasteur, many people believed in an idea called spontaneous generation. This was the idea that living things could just appear from nothing.

Pasteur proved this was not true using special glass flasks. He used flasks with long, curved necks called swan-neck flasks. He showed that if the liquid was sterilized and the flask was sealed, nothing grew. But if the flask was open to the air, microbes would grow inside. This proved that microbes come from other microbes already in the air. This discovery helped support the germ theory of diseases.

Pasteur was born on December 27, 1822, in Dole, France.

He was the third child of Jean-Joseph Pasteur and Jeanne-Etiennette Roqui. As a young student, he liked sketching and fishing more than books. He later studied very hard to become a great scientist. In 1887, he established the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He served as its director until he died on September 28, 1895.

He is buried in a vault right beneath that institute.

His work connects to many things you see in your kitchen every day. When you drink a glass of milk, it is likely safe because of pasteurization.

His ideas also led to the vaccines that protect us from sickness. He helped create vaccines for diseases like rabies and anthrax. These medicines help keep animals and people from getting very ill. By studying tiny germs, he helped save millions of lives around the world. His life shows how being curious can help everyone.
