Gerhard Domagk was a German doctor who studied germs. He was a pathologist and a bacteriologist. This means he studied diseases and tiny living things. He worked very hard to find ways to fight bacteria. His work helped change how we treat sick people. He is most famous for finding a special medicine. This medicine was the first antibiotic that people could buy.

Domagk worked at a place called IG Farben in Wuppertal. His job was to test new chemicals to see if they could be drugs. He looked at special dyes used to color cloth. Scientists had seen that some dyes could fight germs before. Friedrich Mietzsch and Joseph Klarer made a new dye called KL730. This dye had a special part called a sulphonamide group. When a person takes this drug, their body changes it. This change makes the drug work to kill the bacteria.

Domagk first tested the drug on mice in 1931. He gave the medicine to mice with a bad infection. The mice that got the medicine survived the sickness. The mice that did not get the medicine all died. In 1935, his daughter Hildegarde got very sick from a needle injury. She had a bad infection from a germ called Streptococcus pyogenes. The doctors thought they might have to remove her arm to save her life. Domagk used the new drug, Prontosil, to treat her. She recovered and her arm was saved.

Domagk was born in 1895 in a place called Lagow. He studied medicine at the University of Kiel. During the First World War, he served as a medic. He saw many people suffer from infections on the battlefield. This made him want to find ways to stop bacteria. He later worked at the University of Münster. He also worked at the University of Greifswald. He stayed in his job at IG Farben until 1961.

Because of his discovery, Domagk won the Nobel Prize in 1939. This is a very important award for science. However, the Nazi government did not let him take it then. He finally received his Nobel diploma after the war ended in 1947. His discovery of Prontosil was a huge step for medicine. It showed that chemicals could be used to fight infections inside the body. Today, we still use antibiotics to help people get well.
