He looked at special dyes used for coloring cloth. He found one called Prontosil. This drug was a type of antibiotic. An antibiotic is a medicine that kills bacteria. Prontosil was the first one people could buy at a store.

In 1935, Domagk's daughter got very sick. She had an infection from a needle injury. The infection was caused by a germ called Streptococcus pyogenes. Doctors thought they might have to remove her arm. Domagk used Prontosil to treat her. It worked, and she was cured.

Domagk proved the drug worked using tests on mice. He saw that the drug saved them from infection. For this work, he won the Nobel Prize in 1939. The Nobel Prize is a very big award for science. He finally received his prize after the war ended.
