The discovery moved from animals to humans through careful observation. Chagas found the parasite in the blood of a cat. He then identified the same parasite in a two-year-old girl named Berenice Soares de Moura. He took her blood samples on April 14, 1909. This confirmed that Trypanosoma cruzi could infect humans. Chagas also found the parasite in the brain and the myocardium, which is the heart muscle. He realized the infection could lead to serious conditions.
