Giardiasis

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Giardiasis is a very common disease caused by tiny living things called parasites. One specific parasite is named Giardia duodenalis. It is one of the most common parasitic diseases found in humans today. In the developed world, infection rates can be as high as 7%. In the developing world, those rates can reach 30%. In 2013, about 280 million people worldwide had symptoms of this sickness. Because it affects so many people, the World Health Organization calls it a neglected disease.

The way the parasite works involves two different stages. First, it exists as a cyst, which is a hard, protective shell. When a person swallows these cysts, they change into a form called a trophozoite. These trophozoites attach themselves to the walls of the small intestine. Once they are attached, they make many copies of themselves inside the gut. Eventually, they turn back into cysts so they can leave the body through waste.

Getting sick can feel very different for everyone. Some people have no symptoms at all, even if the parasite stays in their body. Others feel very unwell with stomach pain, gas, or nausea. A common sign is a type of diarrhea called steatorrhea. This is a greasy, smelly stool that often floats in water. This happens because the parasite causes malabsorption, which means the body cannot take in nutrients well.

Scientists have studied how this happens for a long time. They found that the parasites can cause the tiny structures in the intestine to flatten. This makes it hard for the body to absorb things like vitamins and sugars. One common problem is that people may become lactose intolerant after the infection. This means they have a hard time digesting milk products for a while. Doctors often use medicines like tinidazole or metronidazole to help treat the sickness.

Many people learn about this through outdoor activities. In North America, some people call it "beaver fever." This is because animals like beavers, cows, and even pets can carry the parasite. You might catch it by drinking untreated water from a lake or a river. It can also spread if people do not wash their hands well. Staying safe involves cooking food properly and using clean water.
