These tiny bugs live in two forms. They can be cysts, which are hard shells. They can also be trophozoites, which are the active form. Once swallowed, the cysts change into trophozoites. These attach to the walls of your gut. They make copies of themselves there. Later, they turn back into cysts to leave the body in waste.

Many people feel sick after eating or drinking bad food or water. You might have stomach pain, gas, or nausea. Some people get diarrhea that is greasy and smells bad. This happens because the bugs stop the body from taking in nutrients. This is called malabsorption. It can cause weight loss and weakness.

In North America, some call this "beaver fever." This is because animals like beavers can carry the bugs. They can spread it to people. You can stay safe by washing your hands. It is also good to cook food well.
