Tiny germs cause this sickness. One type comes from bacteria called Shigella. This is known as shigellosis. Another type comes from a tiny living thing called an amoeba. This is called amoebiasis. These germs get into your body through bad food or water. They can also spread from person to person.

Once inside, the germs hurt the lining of your intestines. This causes swelling and pain. It also makes it hard for your body to use nutrients from food. You can lose a lot of water. This is called dehydration. To stay safe, you must drink plenty of fluids. Doctors may use a special drink called an oral rehydration solution.
