For humans, this happens through the mouth. When we swallow, a process called peristalsis takes over. This movement carries the liquid down the esophagus to the stomach. Gravity also helps move the liquid along this path. People can drink by sipping or sucking from many different vessels. Infants use a special way of suction to drink. They press their lips tight to create a vacuum with their tongues.

Animals have many different ways to drink water.

Cats use their smooth tongues to pull a column of water into their mouths. Dogs use their tongues like a ladle to scoop water up. Ruminants often plunge their mouths into water to drink. Some animals find water in unique ways. For example, elephants use their trunks to squirt water into their mouths. In cold places, animals like hares eat snow or icicles. Some desert insects even drink from nighttime fog.

Water is vital for many parts of the body to work. Humans need water to keep their tissues hydrated. If we do not get enough, we feel thirst. This feeling is managed by a part of the brain called the hypothalamus. A lack of water is called dehydration, which can be very dangerous. On the other hand, drinking too much can cause water intoxication. This happens when the salt levels in the body become too thin.

Different people have different needs for water every day. The USDA suggests a daily intake for adults. They recommend about 3.7 liters for adult males. For adult females, the recommendation is about 2.7 liters. Other nutritionists suggest drinking eight servings of eight ounces each. However, experts say the exact amount depends on many things. These include how hot it is and how much you sweat. Drinking when you feel thirsty is usually enough to stay healthy.

Humans have also made drinks using fermentation for a long time. This process creates alcoholic beverages. We can find evidence of fermented drinks from the Neolithic Period. The first pictures of these drinks are from Egypt around 4,000 BC.
