Humans drink through their mouths. When we swallow, a set of steps moves the liquid down. This is called peristalsis. It moves the liquid through the esophagus to the stomach. Gravity helps this happen too.

Animals have many ways to drink.

Cats use their tongues to lap water. They pull a column of liquid into their mouths. Dogs use their tongues like a ladle to scoop water. Elephants are different. They draw water into their trunks and squirt it into their mouths.

Insects can also drink. Some bugs get water from the air. Others drink from fog.

Water is very important for health. It keeps our body parts hydrated. If we do not get enough water, we feel thirst. This can lead to dehydration. This is when the body loses too much water.
