Plastic bottles are light. They do not break easily. This makes them good for moving. However, they can cause pollution.

Glass bottles are very useful for wine. A cork is a stopper used to seal them. This helps wine age for a long time. In the past, merchants sold wine from barrels. This led to people changing the wine. Now, most fine wine is bottled at the source.

Different shapes serve different jobs. A Bordeaux bottle has a curved shoulder. This helps catch sediment, which is the solid bits in wine. A Champagne bottle is thick and heavy. It must stay strong against the pressure of bubbles.

One special design is the Codd-neck bottle. It uses a marble and a rubber washer to seal the drink. The gas pressure pushes the marble against the washer. This keeps the bubbles inside.
