A wine glass is a special vessel used for drinking or tasting wine.

Most of these glasses are called stemware, or goblets. They are made of three main parts: the bowl, the stem, and the foot.

People often hold the glass by the stem. This helps prevent the heat from a hand from warming the liquid. It also keeps smudges off the bowl. Some people choose to hold red wine glasses differently to add warmth. There are many shapes and sizes of these glasses. Some are designed to be used more casually, like stemless tumblers.

Different shapes can change how a person experiences a drink.

For example, red wine glasses often have wide, round bowls. This wide shape allows for oxidation, which is when oxygen from the air interacts with the wine. This can help smooth out complex flavors. A Bordeaux glass is tall with a broad bowl for full-bodied wines. A Burgundy glass has an even larger bowl to collect aromas. In contrast, white wine glasses often have smaller mouths. This reduces the surface area to keep the wine tasting crisp and fresh.

A tall, narrow Champagne flute helps keep bubbles in the drink longer.

Long ago, people did not use glass for everything. Before the word "glass" was used for drinking vessels around 1382, people used wine cups. These cups came in many shapes and were made of different materials. Many were made of precious metals. In wealthy English homes during the 1600s, glass began to replace silver cups. As glass became better and cheaper, it replaced metal in most places. However, churches still use metal chalices for their needs. Some older glasses were even made of lead glass. Today, many makers use lead-free glass or add titanium to make them stronger.

Scientists have studied how glass shapes affect our senses.

A 2003 study in Dresden found that shape impacts how people perceive odors. In 2015, a researcher named Kohji Mitsubayashi found that shape and temperature change the "bouquet," or the scent, of the wine. He used a camera to see ethanol vapor escaping the glass. There are also very specific rules for tasting glasses. The INAO official wine tasting glass was adopted in France in 1970. This glass has a specific volume between 210 and 225 milliliters. It has a rim diameter of 46 mm and a base diameter of 65 mm.

Glass makers have also used many styles to decorate their work.

In the 18th century, makers drew spiral patterns into the stems. They made "airtwist" glasses using air bubbles or "opaque twist" glasses using colored threads.

You can also find glasses that are cut, engraved, or enameled. Some modern designs focus on aeration to help the wine breathe. Whether it is a small sherry copita or a large red wine glass, the shape serves a purpose. These tools help people enjoy the unique flavors and smells of every drink.
