People use these tiny containers to store many things. They might hold liquids, powders, or even small capsules. Vials are very important in medicine and science. They keep small amounts of medicine safe and clean.

Doctors and scientists rely on them every day. Without them, it would be hard to move small doses of medicine.

There are different ways a vial works to keep things inside. Some vials are made for just one use. These are called single-dose vials. Other vials can be used more than once. These are called multi-dose vials.

The CDC sets special rules for these multi-dose types. This helps make sure the medicine stays safe for every person. Each type of vial has a specific job to do.

We have used glass containers like this for a long time. Small glass vessels date back to classical antiquity.

The word "vial" comes from the Greek word phiale. This word meant a broad, flat container. Other names for them include the Latin phiala or the Middle English fiole. People have been finding ways to hold liquids in small bottles for many centuries.

Modern vials come in many different shapes and materials.

Most are made of glass or plastic like polypropylene. Some have a neck that creates a space called a headspace. Glass vials might use a screw cap or a cork. They can also use a metal cap with a rubber stopper. Plastic vials often have hinge caps that snap shut. Some very small lab bottles are called bijou bottles. These often hold about 10 milliliters of liquid.

You can see how vials work by looking at their bottoms. Many vials have a flat bottom so they can stand up. This is different from a test tube, which usually has a rounded bottom.

Some small plastic vials do not have flat bottoms. You might see a vial used for eye drops at a doctor's office. You might also see them in a science lab. They are a simple but very useful tool for the world.
