An improvised explosive device, or IED, is a bomb made in a non-standard way.

These devices are different from regular military weapons because they are built using many different methods. They can be made from military supplies like artillery shells or from everyday household items.

People often use them as roadside bombs to cause damage or distraction. Some groups use them in urban warfare or during rebellions. Even special military forces sometimes use them for unconventional warfare.

Most IEDs work using five specific parts. First, they need a power source, which is often a battery. Next, they use a switch, also called an activator, to start the process. This leads to an initiator, or a fuse, that begins the explosion. The device also has a container to hold everything together. Finally, there is the explosive charge itself.

Some devices even use items like mobile phones or washing machine timers to act as the trigger.

History shows how these devices have changed over time. The term IED was first used by the British Army during the conflict in Northern Ireland. Later, the term became very common during the Iraq War.

Some types of improvised weapons have even older roots. For example, a device called a fougasse was used in many wars. It was a hole in the ground filled with explosives and stones.

This device could be fired using a fuse or electricity.

There are many different ways to design the explosive part. Some IEDs are general-purpose and create a blast in all directions. These might include pipe bombs or even car bombs.

Other designs are meant to focus energy in one single direction. A shaped charge uses a cone-shaped hole to create a fast jet of metal.

This jet can pierce through thick armor on tanks. An even stronger version is the explosively formed penetrator, or EFP.

These can hit targets from 100 meters or more away.

These devices can be linked to many things we see in daily life. Makers often scavenge parts from consumer electronics like pagers or garage door openers.

Some IEDs are even made to spread dangerous materials. These might include toxic chemicals or biological materials like the glanders bacterium.

Others are incendiary, which means they are designed to start fires. Because they use so many different parts, they are very diverse and hard to predict.
