Field guns are meant to move. They can go where an army marches. This is different from guns in forts. Some guns are also for long sieges. Those guns are too big to move fast.

Napoleon Bonaparte used big wheels on his guns. These wheels helped them move fast during battle. This helped his army break up enemy groups.

In World War II, many field guns were used. The Soviet ZiS-3 was a common one. They made over 103,000 of them. It could hit targets far away. It could also hit tanks.

Later, the U.S. Army used the M107 gun. It was a long-range gun. It was used in the Vietnam War. It had problems with cracked barrels. Now, many armies use gun-howitzers. A howitzer is a gun that fires at high angles. Modern guns like the L118 help soldiers in battle.
