A tank is a strong fighting vehicle used in ground combat.

It is a primary weapon for soldiers on the front lines. These machines must balance three very important things. They need heavy firepower to fight. They need strong armour to stay safe. They also need mobility to move around the battlefield. To help them move, tanks use tracks and a powerful engine.

Most tanks have a large gun. This gun is often kept inside a turret. A turret is a part that can rotate. This allows the gun to point in different directions.

Tanks work in a special way to move over rough ground. Instead of using round wheels, they use continuous tracks. These tracks spread the weight of the heavy vehicle. This helps them drive over mud, ice, or snow. Wheels might get stuck in soft ground, but tracks can climb over it. This makes the tank very flexible. It can move to the best spots to help its team. The engine provides the power needed to push this heavy metal through difficult places.

The idea of a protected vehicle is actually quite old. In the 15th century, Leonardo da Vinci drew a design for a wheeled vehicle. It was surrounded by cannons and moved by people. Long ago in 119 BC, the Han general Wei Qing used armored wagons. These were called Wu Gang Wagons. They helped his troops stay safe from enemy horses. In the 1700s, Richard Lovell Edgeworth worked on a machine to lay down a road. These early ideas helped lead to the real tanks we see today.

The modern history of the tank began in 1915. British leaders wanted to keep their new machines a secret. They used the word "tank" to hide their true plans. They even told people the vehicles were just snowploughs.

A prototype called Little Willie was built in Lincoln, England. Major Walter Gordon Wilson designed the hull. William Tritton designed the track plates. The first British tank, the Mark I, fought in battle in September 1916. This was during the Battle of the Somme.

Tanks have changed a lot over the last century. In World War II, tanks became much larger and more powerful. The Soviet Union used tanks in mass attacks in 1939. Later, Germany used a style of combat called blitzkrieg. This used many tanks at once to move very fast.

Today, tanks are part of combined arms units. This means they work closely with infantry and aircraft. Modern tanks use very strong composite armour to stay protected. They are still a key part of how armies move on land.
