These vehicles are often called non-standard tactical vehicles by the United States military. Most technicals begin as normal civilian pickup trucks with four-wheel drive. People modify them by mounting various weapons in the back. They might use machine guns, rocket launchers, or even anti-tank missiles.

While they are very useful, they are "soft-skinned." This means they lack thick metal armor to protect the people inside. Because of this, they are no match for tanks or powerful aircraft.

How these vehicles work is quite simple. They rely on speed and mobility rather than heavy protection.

Their main strength is the ability to strike from unexpected directions. They can move quickly across difficult ground to deploy troops or fire weapons. Using reliable trucks like the Toyota Hilux makes them easy to maintain. This is helpful for groups that do not have big repair shops. They act much like traditional light cavalry in a battle.

The history of these vehicles goes back a long time.

In World War I, the French armed Ford trucks with guns. During the Spanish Civil War, people fixed field guns to trucks. In World War II, British units like the SAS used unarmored vehicles in the desert. The SAS even used pink Land Rovers nicknamed "Pink Panthers."

These early uses show how people have always adapted cars for fighting.

The name "technical" likely started in Somalia during the 1990s.

One idea is that it came from "technical assistance grants" used to hire gunmen. Another idea says it came from engineers in the 1980s. In 1987, a conflict in Chad became known as the "Great Toyota War."

Chadian troops used technicals to win the Battle of Fada. They even drove through minefields at speeds over 100 km/h to avoid explosions.

Technicals have been seen in many different parts of the world.

Even in the Libyan Civil War, both sides used them to move across the desert. They remain a common sight in many different types of conflicts today.
