How these experts work can change depending on the job. Some soldiers, called combat engineers, work very close to the battle. They might clear obstacles or build bridges while under fire. Other specialists, known as sappers or pioneers, focus on construction and demolition. They might weaken the base of a wall to break it down. Engineers also work with explosives like dynamite to clear paths. They even use special vehicles to help during big landings.

This work has a very long history. The Romans were some of the first to have dedicated engineers. They called their specialist group architecti. These experts built paved roads and strong wooden camps. Some Roman roads are still in use today. In the Middle Ages, engineers focused on castles and fortresses. Sappers were experts at bypassing or breaking through these defenses.

New inventions changed the way engineers worked over time. When cannons appeared in the 14th century, engineers had to manage them. In England, the Office of Ordnance was created around 1370 for this. Later, the British created a special school for training. In 1812, a Royal Warrant authorized teaching sapping and mining. By 1869, it became the School of Military Engineering. This school was a leading scientific center in Europe.

Modern engineering links to many things we see today. Many ideas in civil engineering, which is building for the public, came from military work. For example, the way we build bridges and roads started with these early needs. In World War II, engineers built huge things like the Mulberry harbour.
