They must ensure the environment is safe for their own troops while making it difficult for the enemy.

There are several distinct roles and types of engineering within a military context. Sappers are experts at demolition and bypassing fortification systems. In the past, they might weaken the base of a castle wall to help it breach. Pioneers often act as regimental tradesmen during peacetime, repairing buildings and wagons. On active service, they move at the front of marching columns with tools like axes and shovels. Combat engineers are a more specialized group that operates during active fighting. They use explosives, such as dynamite or landmines, to clear paths or create defenses. In the 20th century, specialized combat engineer vehicles were also developed to support large-scale operations.

The history of this field dates back to ancient civilizations. The Romans were among the first to have a dedicated corps of engineers called architecti. They were famous for building paved roads and fortified wooden camps. Some of these Roman roads are still in use today. In 52 B.C.E., Roman engineers built a double-wall of fortifications in just six weeks to encircle the city of Alesia. This massive feat was likely very demoralizing to the Gallic defenders. Other notable historical examples include the Siege of Tyre under Alexander the Great and the Battle of the Trench, where a trench was dug based on a suggestion by Salman the Persian.

During the Middle Ages, military engineering focused heavily on siege warfare. Engineers planned castles and fortresses, while sappers worked to penetrate existing defenses. The invention of gunpowder in the 14th century changed everything. The appearance of cannons meant that traditional medieval walls were no longer safe. In England, the Office of Ordnance was created around 1370 to manage cannons and castles. This led to new fortification designs, such as the trace italienne, which helped defenders protect themselves from cannon fire. By the 18th century, many armies included pioneer detachments to clear paths for infantry.

Training became more formal and scientific during the 19th century. Following the Peninsular War, the British realized they needed better training for siege operations. In 1812, a Royal Warrant authorized the teaching of "Sapping, Mining, and other Military Fieldworks." This led to the creation of the Royal Engineers Establishment. This institution became a center of excellence for bridging and fieldwork. By 1869, it was renamed the School of Military Engineering (SME). It became a leading scientific military school in Europe. In 1843, a demonstration of assaulting earthworks attracted 43,000 spectators.

In the modern era, the internal combustion engine changed the scope of engineering. The arrival of automobiles and aircraft meant engineers had to support much heavier and faster systems. During World War II, engineers performed massive projects like the construction of Mulberry harbours.

These vehicles helped soldiers overcome the German "Atlantic wall" during the 1944 landings in Normandy.
