A cannon is a large-caliber gun classified as a type of heavy artillery.

These weapons are designed to launch a projectile through a tube. To achieve this, cannons utilize an explosive chemical propellant. For most of history, black powder served as the primary propellant. This changed in the late 19th century with the invention of smokeless powder. Cannons are defined by several specific technical attributes. These include their gauge, which is the diameter of the bore. They also vary in effective range, mobility, rate of fire, and angle of fire. Different designs balance these features to suit specific battlefield needs.

The mechanism of a cannon relies on the rapid expansion of gas. First, a propellant is placed inside the barrel of the gun. Next, an ignition source provides a spark or flame through a touch hole. This causes the chemical propellant to burn almost instantly. The burning process creates a massive amount of expanding gas. This gas exerts extreme pressure against the projectile seated in the barrel. Because the gas is confined, it forces the projectile out of the muzzle at high speed.

Cannons have existed in many different forms and stages of development. Early versions in East Asia likely evolved from the fire-lance. A fire-lance was a short-ranged weapon that combined a gunpowder tube with a polearm. These early tubes were made of bamboo or paper before metal became common. In Europe, early weapons were often small and shot arrows. These were known by names such as ribaldis or handgonnes.

By the end of the 14th century, these smaller pieces gave way to massive bombards. These larger guns were specifically designed to breach thick stone walls during sieges.

The history of the cannon begins in East Asia during the Song dynasty. The earliest known depiction is a sculpture from the Dazu Rock Carvings in China, dated to 1128. However, solid archaeological evidence does not appear until the 13th century. One of the most important artifacts is the Xanadu Gun from 1298. This is the earliest extant cannon to feature an inscription with a production date.

In 1288, a Jurchen commander named Li Ting used hand cannons in combat. By the end of the 14th century, cannon technology had spread across much of Eurasia.

In Europe, the use of cannons changed the nature of warfare significantly. Around 1374, large cannons were recorded breaching walls in Europe for the first time. A major turning point occurred in 1453 when cannons broke the walls of the Roman Empire's capital. Following this, cannons became more important as field artillery. The introduction of the limber greatly improved the maneuverability and mobility of these heavy guns.

By 1480, European cannons reached a "classic form" that was longer, lighter, and more accurate. This design remained relatively consistent until the 1750s.

Specific examples highlight the incredible scale of some historical weapons. In 1464, the Ottoman Empire created the Great Turkish Bombard.

Other notable pieces include the "thousand ball thunder cannon" from the Huolongjing. In the 16th century, the Ming army used thousands of cannons during the siege of Suzhou in 1366. During the Japanese invasions of Korea, the Ming-Joseon coalition used artillery extensively in both land and naval battles. Some of these weapons were even mounted on the turtle ships of Yi Sun-sin. In 1619, the city of Beijing was armed with large cannons using balls weighing more than 100 pounds.

Today, the terminology surrounding these weapons has shifted. The word "cannon" has fallen into decline in many modern contexts. It is often replaced by more specific terms like howitzer, mortar, or simply "artillery." However, the term survives in the name "autocannon." An autocannon is a high-caliber automatic weapon that fires larger rounds than a standard machine gun.

The word itself has deep linguistic roots. It is derived from the Old Italian word for a large tube, which came from the Greek word for a reed. This reflects the fundamental nature of the weapon: a hollow tube used to direct energy.
