The fire lance was a transformative invention in the history of warfare. It served as a primary ancestor to modern firearms.

This weapon combined the reach of a traditional polearm with the sudden force of gunpowder. It was designed to provide a shock advantage during the start of a melee. By using an explosive discharge, soldiers could surprise their opponents. This transition from simple blades to gunpowder-based tools changed how battles were fought.

The mechanism of the fire lance evolved alongside the development of gunpowder technology. Early versions consisted of a tube made of bamboo. This tube contained gunpowder and a slow match used for ignition. When lit, the gunpowder would ideally eject a stream of flames from the tube.

As technology improved, users began adding projectiles to the mixture. They included items like iron pellets or pottery shards. When the gunpowder charge ignited, it ejected these projectiles along with the flame. This created a weapon that functioned like a combination of a flamethrower and a shotgun. However, these weapons had a very short effective range of about three meters.

There were several distinct stages in the design of the fire lance. Initially, the tube was strapped to a spear or other polearm weapon. The lance-point was used in conjunction with the fire. Later, the lance-point was discarded entirely. The weapon began to rely solely on the power of the gunpowder blast. By the mid-13th century, the material of the barrel also changed. Makers transitioned from bamboo to metal to better withstand the explosive pressure.

These independent metal barrels were known as eruptors. These eruptors became the direct forerunners of the hand cannon.

The history of the fire lance begins in China. The earliest known representation of the weapon dates to the year 950. While it appeared early, its use in warfare was not recorded until 1132. During the Siege of De'an, Song dynasty garrisons used them against the Jin dynasty. In 1163, fire lances were even attached to "at-your-desire-carts." These were special war carts used to defend mobile firebomb trebuchets. By the late 1100s, the addition of shrapnel like porcelain shards increased their effectiveness.

Specific historical accounts highlight the impact of these weapons. In 1232, the Jin dynasty used fire lances with reusable barrels made of durable paper. In 1233, a leader named Pucha Guannu led 450 fire lancers. This group successfully routed an entire Mongol encampment. While the Mongols were often dismissive of other weapons, they reportedly feared the fire lance. Another significant milestone occurred in 1259. A pellet wad used to block the barrel was recorded as a projectile. This is considered the first recorded bullet in history.

Fire lances eventually spread across much of the globe. By 1280, the Middle East had acquired the technology. In 1396, European knights utilized fire lances as mounted weapons. During the 15th century, Japanese samurai also employed them. In Europe, certain versions used wooden tubes and were called Troncks, fire-trunks, or bombas. These were frequently issued to warships. One surviving example was discovered in the wreck of the La Trinidad Valencera. The last recorded usage in Europe occurred during the Storming of Bristol in 1643. Even in 1660, the Commonwealth of England still issued them to ships.

The evolution of the fire lance connects to the broader development of chemical energy in weaponry. The shift from bamboo to metal barrels represents a major leap in material science. It allowed for higher pressures and more reliable shots. This progression led directly to the development of cannons and modern guns. The fire lance was not just a single tool, but a stepping stone in a long chain of technological advancement.
