A spear is a versatile polearm consisting of a long shaft and a pointed head.

Most shafts are crafted from wood, providing a lightweight but sturdy base. The head is the functional point of the tool. It may be a sharpened end of the wood itself, known as a fire-hardened spear. Alternatively, a more durable head can be fastened to the shaft. These heads are made from materials like bone, flint, obsidian, copper, bronze, iron, or steel.

Modern designs often feature metal spearheads shaped like triangles, diamonds, or leaves. Spears are essential tools that have been used for hunting, fishing, and warfare throughout human history.

Spears are generally categorized by how they are used in combat. The first category includes weapons designed for thrusting in melee, or close-range combat. This group includes long weapons like lances and pikes. The second category consists of spears designed to be thrown as ranged weapons. These are usually called javelins.

Fishing spears represent a specialized type of design. They often feature multiple sharp points, sometimes including barbs, to ensure a successful catch.

This variety allows the spear to adapt to almost any environment or need.

Manufacturing a spear requires careful assembly of different parts. During the Middle Paleolithic period, humans created complex stone blades with flaked edges. These stone heads were attached to wooden shafts using various binding methods. People used gum, resin, or bindings made of animal sinew, leather strips, or vegetable matter.

By approximately 15,000 BC, hunters had even developed spear-launchers. These devices helped humans increase both the force and the distance of a throw. Many of these ancient launchers were decorated with intricate carvings of animals.

Evidence shows that spear technology is incredibly ancient. Wooden spears found in England and Germany prove they were used for hunting at least 400,000 years ago.

In South Africa, a 2012 study at Kathu Pan suggests that hominids, possibly Homo heidelbergensis, used stone-tipped spears 500,000 years ago. Interestingly, spear manufacture is not unique to humans. In Senegal, western chimpanzees have been observed making spears. They break limbs from trees, strip the bark, and sharpen the ends with their teeth to hunt galagos.

In classical antiquity, the spear shaped the way armies fought. The Greek hoplite was a central figure in the phalanx, a close-order infantry formation.

A hoplite typically carried an iron-headed spear called a doru and a large bronze-faced shield known as an aspis. Later, the Macedonians developed the sarissa, a massive two-handed pike.

The Roman military also relied heavily on the spear. Roman legionaries used the pilum, a heavy javelin designed to pierce and foul enemy shields.

While the pilum eventually disappeared from common use, spears remained vital for anti-cavalry defense.

During the Medieval period, the spear remained the primary weapon for the common soldier. It was highly economical because it required only a small amount of steel for the edges. Most of the spearhead was made of cheaper wrought iron. This made them much faster and easier to manufacture than swords.

Infantry often used spears in defensive formations like the shield wall or the schiltron. To stop charging horses, soldiers would plant their spear shafts firmly into the ground. Famous leaders like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce used these circular or rectangular formations to defeat much larger armies.

Spears also underwent significant changes when used by cavalry. In the 12th century, the introduction of stirrups and high-cantled saddles transformed the spear into the lance.

Knights developed the couched lance technique, where they tucked the weapon under their armpit. This allowed the momentum of the charging horse to focus entirely on the tip of the lance. This specialized use eventually led to the development of the lance as a distinct weapon for jousting. Even as warfare changed with the arrival of gunpowder, the spear's legacy continued through the bayonet fixed to modern long guns.
