The fire lance was a very early weapon that changed how people fought. It is considered the ancestor of the modern guns we see today.

This invention started as a way to surprise enemies during a fight. It began as a small device attached to a long spear. By adding fire to a polearm, soldiers could gain a sudden advantage. This helped them start a battle with a big shock.

How the weapon worked changed as people learned more about gunpowder. At first, a tube made of bamboo held the gunpowder and a slow match. When the match was lit, the tube shot out a stream of flames. Later, people added small objects like iron pellets or pottery shards into the tube. The blast from the gunpowder would push these pieces out along with the fire. This made the weapon work like a mix of a flamethrower and a shotgun. It worked best at a very short range of about three meters.

History shows us that these weapons appeared in China very early on. The earliest evidence of a fire lance dates back to the year 950. By 1132, soldiers used them during a siege in the city of De'an. In 1163, they even attached fire lances to special war carts. By 1232, the Jin dynasty used versions made of durable paper. In 1233, a leader named Pucha Guannu used 450 fire lancers to defeat a Mongol camp. The Mongol soldiers were said to greatly fear this weapon.

As time passed, the materials used for the fire lance became much stronger. By the mid-13th century, makers began using metal for the barrels. Metal could better withstand the heavy explosive blast of the gunpowder. Around this time, people stopped using the spearhead and relied only on the blast. These independent metal barrels were called eruptors. These eruptors were the direct forerunner of the hand cannon. By 1276, even the written name for the lance changed to include a character for metal.

Fire lances eventually traveled to many different parts of the world. By 1280, they had reached the Middle East. In 1396, knights in Europe used them while riding horses. Japanese samurai also used them during the 15th century. In Europe, some versions used wooden tubes and were called Troncks. These were often used on warships to help in battles. Even as late as 1660, England was still giving these weapons to its ships.
