A blood agent is a very fast-acting poison. It is a toxic chemical that enters the body through the blood. These agents often appear as colorless gases at room temperature. Some might have a very faint smell. They are usually based on either cyanide or arsenic. Because they turn into gas easily, they are more dangerous in small, closed rooms. In open areas, they are less toxic.

These chemicals work by stopping how our cells use oxygen. This happens at a tiny level inside the body. Cyanide-based agents stop a process called the electron transport chain. This chain is located in the inner parts of mitochondria. Mitochondria are the parts of a cell that handle energy. Arsine is different because it damages red blood cells. These cells are the ones that carry oxygen everywhere. Without oxygen, the cells begin to suffocate.

History shows how these agents have been used. During the Crimean War, people proposed using cacodyl oxide as a weapon. This was also called Cadet's fuming liquid. A much stronger version called cacodyl cyanide was also suggested. Later, Nazi Germany used hydrogen cyanide, known as Zyklon B. They used it in gas chambers during the Holocaust. This caused the largest number of deaths from chemical agents ever recorded.

There are many different types of these agents. Hydrogen cyanide is a colorless gas with a faint almond smell. Only about half of all people can smell it. Cyanogen chloride is another gas that has a biting odor. Arsine is a gas that smells like garlic. It is often used in the semiconductor industry. Some people might encounter it by accident at work. Other substances, like sodium cyanide, look like white sugar crystals.

Knowing the symptoms can help people understand the danger. Small amounts of cyanide might not do anything at all. Higher amounts can cause dizziness, weakness, or nausea. Very strong exposure can cause death in just seconds. When these agents kill, the person's blood may look bright red. This is because the cells cannot use the oxygen in the blood. To stay safe, people use special masks and protective clothing.
