Blood agents are toxic chemicals. They enter the body through the blood. These agents work very fast. They are often gases that have no color. Some have a faint smell.

One type is based on cyanide. Another type is based on arsenic. People might breathe these in or swallow them. Cyanide can be found in cigarette smoke. It can also come from burning certain fabrics. Arsine is another gas. It is often found in workplaces.

These agents stop how our cells work. They stop the exchange of oxygen. Oxygen is the air our cells need to live. Without it, the cells suffocate. This can cause death in minutes or even seconds. Because of this, a person's blood may turn bright red.

Symptoms depend on how much a person breathes in. Small amounts may do nothing. More can cause dizziness or nausea. Very high amounts cause a person to stop breathing. This is called respiratory failure.

To stay safe, people use masks. Special clothing also helps. Some cyanide can be treated with antidotes. An antidote is a medicine that fights poison.
