Most systems use compressed air. This is air that has been squeezed tight. A machine called a compressor does this work. It uses power to squeeze the air into a small space. This squeezed air can then move parts like motors or cylinders.

People have used air power for a long time. Early tools included blowguns and bellows. A man named Ctesibius lived a long time ago. He is called the father of pneumatics. He made toys that ran on air and water. Later, Otto von Guericke made a vacuum pump. This tool could pull air out of a container.

Pneumatics is different from hydraulics. Hydraulics use liquid, like oil, to move things. Air is easy to squeeze, but liquid is not. This makes pneumatic tools good at absorbing shocks. They are also very safe. There is a low chance of fire with air. You can find these tools in many places. They help dentists, builders, and miners. They even help run the brakes on big buses and trains.
