Later, the Californian stamp became very popular. It was shown at the 1894 San Francisco midsummer fair. This version could generate electricity using a wood-fed steam boiler. A single Californian head could crush 1.5 tons of ore. This was more than the 1 ton crushed by Cornish stamps. The first U.S. mill was built in 1829 in North Carolina.

Stamp mills have been used for many different jobs. Some were used to make paper pulp in early paper making. Others were used to process oil-seeds before pressing the oil.

History shows that the components for these machines have been known for millennia. During the Hellenistic era in the Eastern Mediterranean, people used water wheels and cams. By the first century AD, the Roman scholar Pliny noted that water-driven pestles were widespread in Italy. These trip-hammers were used for pounding grain and for metalworking. Archaeological evidence, such as deformed hammer-heads in Kent, suggests Romans used them for metal. In mining, Romans used cam-operated ore stamps at sites like Dolaucothi in Wales and on the Iberian Peninsula.

As time progressed, the use of stamp mills expanded across different cultures and regions. In 973, miners in Samarkand utilized them, and by the 11th century, they were common throughout the Islamic world. In medieval Europe, water-powered trip hammers reappeared by the 12th century. Records from Styria in 1135 and 1175 describe vertical stamp mills used for crushing ore. The famous inventor Leonardo da Vinci even sketched trip hammers for use in forges. By the 15th century, many European trip hammers took the shape of the vertical pestle stamp-mill.

During the 19th century, different regional designs emerged to meet specific mining needs. Around 1850, Cornish stamps were developed for tin mining. These used heavy timber with iron heads weighing between 4 and 8 cwt, or roughly 200 to 400 kg. They were often powered by water wheels, though larger versions used steam engines.

Later, the Californian stamp became a significant innovation. These stamps used a side-mounted cam to lift the stamp, which caused it to rotate. This rotation helped even out the wear on the stamp's foot. A single Californian head could crush 1.5 tons of ore, outperforming the 1 ton capacity of Cornish stamps.

The California stamp also introduced new ways to power mining operations. It made a major debut at the 1894 San Francisco midsummer fair. This version was the first to generate electricity using a wood-fed steam boiler. The steam powered wheels and belts, while a steam-driven generator provided electricity for overhead lighting. This advancement allowed mining companies to increase their production time. While many large-scale operations moved to more efficient methods in the late 19th century, the simplicity of the stamp mill allowed it to remain in use in remote areas well into the 20th century. Even today, artisanal miners in Colombia use stamp mills powered by electric motors.
