Mechanical screening

Mechanical screening is a very useful way to sort materials.

It works by taking crushed or granulated items and separating them into different sizes. This practice is used in many big industries. For example, mining and food companies use it every day. It is also used in recycling and making medicines. By sorting things by size, companies can make the exact products they need.

To understand how it works, we look at the machine parts. A screen machine has a drive that creates vibration. It also has a deck to hold everything in place. The most important part is the screen media, which is like a cloth with holes.

When the machine vibrates, the material moves across the screen. Small particles fall through the holes in the mesh. Larger particles stay on top because they are too big. This process is called grading or cutting.

Different machines use different types of motion to move the material. One type is called circle-throw equipment. This machine shakes its whole frame to move huge items like boulders.

Another type is high-frequency equipment. This machine keeps the frame still and only vibrates the screen cloth. It is used for very tiny particles, sometimes as small as 5 microns. There is also gyratory equipment that moves in a circular path.

Several physical forces help the screening happen. Vibration moves the material so it can find a hole. Gravity pulls the smaller pieces down through the mesh. Density also plays a part in how material layers itself. Sometimes, electrostatic forces can make things difficult. This happens when very dry material builds up a charge. It can make particles stick to the screen. This can cause blinding, which is when the holes get plugged up.

Screening is a lot like using a kitchen strainer. When you pour pasta into a strainer, the water falls through the tiny holes. The pasta stays in the bowl because it is too large. In industry, machines do this same thing on a much bigger scale. They might use water to wash the material during the process. This is called wet screening. They can also do it with just air, which is dry screening. Both ways help ensure the final product is the perfect size.
