Most paper today comes from large industrial machines. These machines make huge rolls that can weigh many tons. However, some people still make paper by hand as an art. Handmade paper is special because every sheet is unique.

Making paper works through a specific way of using fibers. First, makers separate cellulose fibers from raw materials like wood or cotton. These fibers are beaten down into a soft mix called pulp. This pulp is mixed with water to create a liquid called furnish.

Next, this liquid is poured onto a screen held in a wooden frame. The frame is called a deckle. As the water drains through the mesh, the fibers stay behind. They form a mat of interwoven fibers on the screen. Finally, the wet mat is pressed and dried to make a strong sheet.

People have been making writing materials for a very long time. Long ago, people in Egypt used papyrus. They made it by laying strips of a plant pith side-by-side. They then added a second layer and pounded them with a mallet. In China, paper was used for wrapping as early as the eighth century BC.

A man named Cai Lun is often credited with inventing paper. He lived during the Han dynasty around 105 CE. He used things like mulberry fibers, old rags, and fishnets to make it.

History shows how paper spread and changed over many years. By the 6th century, people in China were even using toilet paper. In the 8th century, papermaking spread to the Islamic world. Cities like Baghdad and Damascus became important places for making paper. In the 1800s, new inventions changed everything again. Charles Fenerty and Friedrich Gottlob Keller helped create a way to use wood pulp. This allowed factories to make much more paper for newsprint.

Today, you can see the results of papermaking everywhere you look. When you use a notebook, you are using paper made from fibers. If you see a watermark on a piece of paper, that was made by weaving a design into the screen. Even the paper used in hot air balloons was made by the Montgolfier brothers. They owned a paper mill before they became famous for flight. From small art projects to huge factory rolls, paper is a part of our daily lives.
