This innovation ended the 2,000-year reliance on pulped rags. It enabled the mass production of newsprint and most modern paper products. Today, industrial machines produce rolls that can weigh several tons.

There are many interesting details found in finished paper products. Handmade paper often features "deckle edges," which are slightly irregular and wavy. You might also see "laid lines" or "chain lines" caused by the wires in the screen. Makers can even create watermarks by weaving designs directly into the mould wires. Even famous figures have ties to this industry. The Montgolfier brothers, known for achieving human flight, owned a paper mill. Their family background in paper was vital to their success with hot air balloons.
